Neo Geo AES Price: $649.99 New, $1,020 Used in 2026

The Neo Geo AES cost $649.99 in the United States as SNK's Gold System bundle, about $1,540 in 2025 dollars, and single cartridges ran $200 to $300. SNK stopped making the home console in 1997 after roughly 410,000 sold worldwide. Original consoles now trade around $1,020 loose, and the hardware reissue SNK and Plaion announced in 2026, the NEOGEO AES+, is now due on September 16, 2027.

What did $649.99 actually buy at US retail?

SNK sold the Advanced Entertainment System, the AES, in two bundles. The Gold System listed at $649.99 with two arcade-style joysticks and a pack-in game. A cheaper Silver System came with one joystick and no game at $399.99.

SNK had planned a $599 US debut before the launch price went up. The dates are messier than the price: Wikipedia puts the North American AES release at July 1, 1991 and flags that date as unsourced, while other write-ups place the US arrival in 1990, the year SNK's MVS arcade boards reached American operators.

The hardware explains the number. The AES was not a scaled-down home machine running arcade ports. It used the same Motorola 68000 and Zilog Z80 arrangement as the MVS arcade system, which made a Neo Geo cartridge close to an arcade ROM board in a plastic shell.

Wikipedia calls it "the most expensive home video game console ever released at the time" once inflation is accounted for, putting $649.99 at the equivalent of roughly $1,540 in 2025 dollars. SNK was not the last company to bet on a premium console either, as the 3DO's launch price would show a few years later.

Why did Neo Geo cartridges cost as much as a console?

Individual Neo Geo cartridges sold for $200 to $300 each. That was not a markup for prestige. Because SNK did almost nothing to adapt the arcade hardware for living rooms, a home cartridge carried something close to the full arcade ROM set, and ROM chips were the expensive part of any 1990s game.

The result was a console where one fighting game could cost more than a rival console with a game included. A buyer who wanted four Neo Geo titles was looking at roughly $800 to $1,200 in software on top of the $649.99 machine.

SNK's own answer arrived in 1994 with the Neo Geo CD, which moved the same library onto discs that cost a fraction of a cartridge and traded that saving for long load times. It never displaced the cartridge system among people who already owned one.

Those are 1990s dollars, and they do not translate gently. Our run through 90s tech prices in 2026 dollars covers how far the gap has widened on everything from consoles to camcorders.

How many Neo Geo AES consoles did SNK actually sell?

About 410,000 AES units worldwide, by the figure Wikipedia carries, against about one million MVS arcade units. Wikipedia also records 980,000 units for the AES and the Neo Geo CD combined as of March 1997, so the home side of the Neo Geo was always the smaller business.

The console almost did not reach shops at all. In Japan the AES began as a rental-only machine supplied to video game stores, because manufacturing cost ruled out a normal retail price. SNK reversed that after demand held up and sold it as a luxury product instead.

That shape held for the rest of its life. SNK stopped manufacturing the AES in 1997, seven years after the Japanese retail launch, while the MVS arcade platform carried on until 2004. The company itself filed for bankruptcy in Osaka in October 2001, and the brand passed through Playmore and then SNK Playmore before returning to the SNK name in 2016.

Is the Neo Geo AES still worth money in 2026?

Yes, and more than it cost new in nominal dollars. The price tracker SportsCardPro, which runs on PriceCharting's sales data, lists the Neo Geo AES console at about $1,020 loose, about $2,912 complete in box, and about $4,318 for a sealed unit.

Software is where the real money sits. The same tracker has Metal Slug around $3,358 loose, and a handful of low-print titles reach five figures. A complete Neo Geo library is not a collection a normal person assembles; it is closer to a car.

Condition drives most of the spread. The AES uses a memory card for saves and a pair of heavy joysticks that take abuse, so a tested console with a working card slot and one good stick is worth paying up for over an untested unit with a bargain price.

Where to find one today. Budget around $1,000 for a tested loose console with one joystick, and considerably more if you want the box. A retro hardware specialist is the safer route for a 35-year-old system than an unknown seller, and Stone Age Gamer's catalog search is a reasonable place to start on consoles, memory cards and sticks.

Can you buy a brand new Neo Geo instead?

Soon, at a quarter of the original price. SNK and the publisher Plaion announced the NEOGEO AES+ in April 2026 and opened pre-orders on April 16, 2026. The standard console lists at $249.99, a white Anniversary Edition at $349.99, and an Ultimate Edition at $999.99, with new cartridges around $90 each.

The pitch is that it is not an emulation box. Plaion builds the machine around application-specific integrated circuits that reproduce the behavior of the original chips, and it accepts original AES cartridges rather than a built-in ROM menu.

Ben Jones, commercial director of Plaion Replai, told the press at the announcement that "The NEOGEO remains peerless in the eyes of arcade enthusiasts", and said the new system was priced at a level every gamer could finally afford.

Ten games were lined up to launch with the hardware, including Metal Slug and The King of Fighters 2002. The catch is the calendar.

Why has the AES+ slipped to September 2027?

Memory chips. The AES+ was set for November 12, 2026, and in September 2026 Plaion moved the worldwide launch to September 16, 2027, about ten months later.

The company blamed "Unprecedented worldwide demand for memory chips, driven by investment in AI infrastructure", saying global component supply constraints meant it could not manufacture enough systems for a worldwide launch. The statement added: "We know this is a significant delay, and we're genuinely sorry."

Plaion said existing pre-orders keep their place in the queue, that there is no price increase, and that consoles from the launch production run will include a bonus for early buyers. Nobody has to re-order.

For anyone weighing an original against the reissue, that is the live question in 2026. A loose original is about four times the price of a standard AES+ and available now; the AES+ costs $249.99 and is a year away. The 1990 machine has held its value through worse news than a chip shortage, and the arcade hardware argument that made it expensive is the same one SNK is selling again. Readers who followed how the Sega Saturn landed in the collector market will recognize the pattern: scarce hardware plus an expensive software library equals a floor under the price.
